To help celebrate Lake Forest Preservation Foundation’s Family Fair,
The Market House chef, Dominic Zumpano is offering Pulled Pork Sandwiches. We’ll be serving off our patio this Saturday from 11am – 1pm.

As always, we do it ourselves, brining the pork for 24 hours, slow roasting it, smoking it, then serving it on a house made bun.

For kids, peanut butter and jelly will be available.

All profits will be donated to the Foundation so come early and eat often!

Dominic Zumpano’s Menu wows the crowds as Market House on the Square opens in Lake Forest

Market House on the Square opened its doors for the first time Friday May 18th on a perfect warm Chicago spring night as more than 1000 guests dined over the weekend and experienced the new menu created by Executive Chef Dominic Zumpano. The iconic patio off Market Square was in full swing as diners enjoyed Dominic’s unique take on Classic dishes such as Short Rib Pot Roast, The Wedge Salad, American Bouillabaisse, Tater Tots, and Lake Superior Whitefish.

The Market House on the Square is a concept built on a few simple concepts. Chef Zumpano uses Fresh, Local ingredients and makes as much as he can from Scratch to create a unique take on Familiar Food that we grew up with, and a fresh look at Dishes we have come to Crave as adults. The James Beard nominee and Chicago native infuses a lighter touch to some of the “heavier” classics such as Meatloaf, Crab Cakes, and Beef Stroganoff, while bringing a healthier and fresher approach to very popular dishes like Summer Vegetable Risotto, Ginger Steamed Salmon and the very unique “Burger, No Bun”.

This emphasis on Local, Fresh, Familiar product also extends to the Bar where great Local Craft Beer favorites include Half Acre, Tighthead Blonde Ale from Mundelein and Inspiration Pale Ale from up the street in Lake Bluff. These are the centerpiece to a beverage menu that includes Classic cocktails with North Shore Vodka and Gin and a robust wine list featuring 20 selections by the quartino.

Chef Zumpano will be rolling out Sunday Brunch items sometime in early June, and the entire menu is available for carry out.

Please come and experience Lake Forest’s newest restaurant in one of its oldest buildings.

We’ve created a unique menu full of regional favorites, classics we grew up with, great salads, and wonderful desserts. Our focus is fresh, made from scratch foods done slighly differently than you’ve had them in the past.

We also want to introduce the new Market House Bar, featuring specialty cocktails, fun fizzs, eight beers on tap, great snacks, and wines by the glass or bottle.

We look forward to having you join us for lunch and dinner this weekend and in the future, we’re excited to bring to Lake Forest this exciting new concept.

To hear about dinner and lunch specials, unique events, and happenings at the Market House, be sure to “like” us on Facebook. We post daily.

One other bit of news; in order to focus on the Market House and bring you the best service and food we can, Bank Lane Bistro is closing for the summer. We plan to reopen in the fall with a new concept, faithful to our emphasis on quality fresh food made from scratch.

Introducing Market House on the Square

South Gate Café is changing names and announcing a New Chef

market-house-front-for-blog-300x201 The venerable Restaurant, located at 655 Forest Avenue in Lake Forest is being renamedMarket House on the Square as it changes concepts to feature regional American dishes. The Restaurant, recently purchased along with sister Restaurant Bank Lane Bistro by Carla and Mark Westcott and a group of Lake Forest Investors, is currently undergoing extensive renovations and expects to re-open in early May.

Mark Westcott said the new concept “was inspired by friends and family with a goal of providing great food and a welcoming atmosphere that will serve not only the Lake Forest community, but can return the Restaurant to its place as one of the North Shore’s best dining experiences.“ The location on Lake Forest’s Iconic Market Square in one of its many historic buildings is the inspiration for the name and will be reflected in the restaurant’s style and ambience. Nationally renowned Restaurant Architect and Designer, and Lake Forest resident, Mark Knauer is heading the redesign.

Market House on the Square will feature a food and beverage menu that gives diners a fresh take on classic “craved” food and great Regional American dishes. The uniquely familiar take on foods we love will focus on fresh, made from scratch recipes and locally sourced product. “Cravings are a powerful force. We’ve all felt that tug of an unforgettable taste that we simply had to experience again. Our goal is to create that kind of experience for our guests in a very comfortable and timeless setting”

Beard Nominee Dominic Zumpano to head Market House Kitchen

Chef-Dominic-Zumpano-200x300 The culinary driver of the new concept is James Beard nominated Chef and Chicagoland native Dominic Zumpano, late of Milwaukee’s 3½ star Graffito and 4 star Umami Moto. “I am thrilled to be back home in Chicago and to be able to create a menu that really connects people to the food that they love. For me, cooking is about creating new experiences for diners that is rooted in the familiar and yet takes them to places that they have never been before through new combinations and the freshest ingredients.”

Dominic’s career began as a line cook at the Iconic Bensenville Restaurant Plentywood Farms, and has taken him from Coast to Coast. Zumpano, first in his class at Scottsdale Culinary Institute, has worked at The Rose Garden Restaurant in Maine, one of only 47 5-Diamond restaurants in the U.S., and was Executive Sous Chef at the Camelback Resort in Arizona before settling in Milwaukee. While at the Camelback’s signature Restaurant, Elements, he worked closely with Executive Chef and Iron Chef winner Beau MacMillian to invent innovative seasonal menus based on fresh, local ingredients produced from a network of artisans and organic farmers.

Chef Zumpano was nominated for the James Beard award in 2010 for his bold cooking at Milwaukee’s Umami Moto, and calls cooking at The Beard House in New York “the highlight of my career”. While in Milwaukee, both of his concepts, Graffito, and Umami Moto received great reviews and national attention for his creative, fresh approach to both Italian and Asian Fusion cuisine respectively.

In the interim, diners are encouraged to visit Bank Lane Bistro which remains open under the direction of Chef de Cuisine Jared Claude. The Bistro will continue to serve Lunch and Dinner Monday through Saturdays.
